Flat Rock Playhouse, Flat Rock NC – A Class Act

Way back in nineteen thirty seven a group of foot loose and fancy free struggling performers banded together and named themselves as Vagabonds. Very rightly so, because they were traveling from place to place taking their plays wherever they found an appreciative audience, until they finally landed in Flat Rock NC, and lost their heart to the charm of this little town.

The cool breeze blowing from the Blue Ridge Mountain and warmth of the people of Flat Rock NC, has Robroy Farquhar and his fellowmen from Vagabond return time and again to this place which witnessed its first play in an old  grist mill converted into a makeshift playhouse at Highland Lake.

After the Second World War, these vagabonds regrouped and once again headed to Flat Rock NC and decided to make it their home and also to finally ground themselves in the Flat Rock village after spending the post war period in Lake Summit playhouse. After buying a plot of eight acres in the village in 1952, the Vagabonds at last found a permanent place to build their playhouse, which till today stands as the Flat Rock Playhouse. The North Carolina Assembly by an act in 1961 officially designated it as the State theatre of North Carolina.

The young residents and some old timers enjoy eight months of theatre, musicals, Broadway and comedies in the playhouse which began its journey holding shows only during the summers in the early nineteen forties. The playhouse today is the powerhouse of cultural activities of Flat Rock as well as North Carolina. It runs not only professional shows almost all the months in a year, but also has educational, internship and training programs throughout the year. In addition to ten show professional series, college apprentice and intern programs are held during fall and summer of every year to catch the youngsters who are interested in performing arts and want to make a career out of it.

The Youtheatre group stages cabaret and performing series and children right from kindergarten to grown ups have the opportunity to learn all the nuances of the performing arts at the playhouse theatre. Today the playhouse theatre is a major contributor to art and economy of North Carolina and draws almost a hundred thousand patrons through its doors in a year. Locals and tourists throng the playhouse and there is something to look forward to every night in Flat Rock playhouse.
